DevaCurl

This review is L-O-N-G overdue and for that I apologize.  As a curly girl this is a company that you cannot ignore and some people actually look at them as the innovators of curl products.

Their history goes back to 1994 when co-owner Lorraine Massey opened the first salon in New York City.  The salon is called Devachan and they offer specialty cuts for curly hair called the DevaCut. In 2002, they launched DevaCurl No Poo which is a non-lathering conditioning cleanser that substitutes shampoo.  It has been said that this was the beginning of the co-washing movement.  They soon developed an entire line of products that are 100% cruelty free, sulfate free, paraben free, and silicone free.  This is just a small portion of the line . . . .

Lorraine Massey is also the author of the bible for curly hair called “The Curly Girl Handbook” which is now on its’ second edition.  A section has been devoted to us kinky-curly or as she likes to say “Super Curly” girls.  See how she did that? She married the salon, products and books together . . .  genious!!!!

They have developed a 3 step system to cleanse, hydrate and define curls. The DevaCurl claim to fame is that their products work for EVERYONE. The products are formulated to work on hair that ranges from wavy to super curly.  With a claim like that, you KNOW I had to give it a go.

I received the new DevaCurl Decadence line of products in the Curl Box Natural Box a few months ago.  The box contained the No Poo Decadence Milk Cleanser, One Condition Decadence Milk Conditioner, Supercream Coconut Curl Styler, Ultra Defining Gel, and Set It Free Moisture Lock Spray.  I was later sent products from DevaCurl when I won a contest so I have had ample opportunity to use the products more than once.  I did not want to give a rushed, one-time usage review on this company because this is a company that a lot of us kinky curly girls have been eyeing but not sure to try.

I shampooed with the No Poo and even though it did not lather, it felt luxurious and rich.  With this cleanser,  you are supposed to focus mostly on the scalp.  Lift the section of your hair and massage the cleanser into your scalp. It foams up a little so you can tell that it’s cleansing.  It has a very clean and fresh scent. When you rinse, the cleanser travels down the hair to clean the hair from root to tip.

I then parted my hair in 4 sections and applied the Milk Conditioner by raking it through and using the “praying hands” method.  I made sure to amply an ample amount at the ends.  The conditioner was creamy and had the same fresh and clean scent.  I rinsed the conditioner out but made sure leave a little behind.

Before applying styling products, I added a little conditioner to each section.  This was a tip I learned from other super curly curls because our hair needs SOOOOO much moisture.  As I mentioned before, my hair was parted in 4 sections and as I worked on a section, I would separate again and then layer a little conditioner, the Coconut Curl Styler and the Defining Gel.  Here are the results once I was finished with the application.

20151116_182650_resized

The process was quick and easy but I found out that I could not follow the application to the letter.  I have short super curly hair so the “flip your hair, apply gel lightly from nape to ends and crunch” was an epic fail for me and left my hair with super shrinkage.

The second time I decided to forego the gel and just style by applying a small amount of conditioner and Coconut Curl Styler.  I also used my diffuser to help my hair dry quicker.

I got more height from my hair so I was pleased.  Since my hair is short I do mini pineapples at night starting with parting my hair in 4 or 5 sections the first night and then 2 sections the second night – this helps to stretch my hair.

So what’s the PROS?:  Super Curlies, kinky-curlies, and froistas: don’t be scared to try this product.  You have to give it a try.  I was shocked at the curl formation that I got from the products with minimal effort.  This is another product that makes wash day extremely quick and easy.  I am happy with the curly fro I received using this product.

The CONS:  (1) The price.  Gorgeous curls that can be achieved by everyone come at a hefty price. The “Kit for All Curl Kind” is everything I received except the Set It Free but in 3 oz. sizes and it’s $30.  Some people might think that is a steep price tag.  To their defense, I hear that they have regular sales and promotions once you sign up for the mailing list on their website.  Right now they are having great Black Friday sales so if you want to try, this is the time to do it. (2) The Set It Free Spray gave me shrinkage and a little more fro-ism than I expected.  I used the spray on the second day because my curls were looking dry and needed some umph.  Maybe I just needed to check in with their Facebook page to get help.  They have “Ask the Curl Coach” Wednesdays on Facebook where you can get questions answered.  I have GOT to set myself a reminder for that.

So my final takeaway . . . . try it, it works.  Hard to believe one product can work for curl patterns across the whole spectrum but it works.  You just have to learn how to tweak it for your specific hair type,  The “Ask the Curl Coach” is definitely something that I will be using.   The products are all natural and that is HUGE! There is no more guessing that I have to find out what shampoo is Curly Girl (CG ) approved?, what conditioner is CG approved?, or what stylers are CG approved?  Their line has everything you need, there’s nothing to think about.  Don’t be scared of the price tag.  I’m a diva on a budget as well but once I found out that there are sales online, in Ulta and flash sales occasionally, I knew this was something I could afford. Just stock up when you find a great sale.  The CG Method can be intimidating and mind-boggling and I’m happy that the creator of the line has provided a system that works and takes the guesswork out of achieving the curls you desire.

Koils by Nature

Todays’ blog is highlighting Koils by Nature which is the company of Pamela J. Booker. Her goal was to provide her customers with exceptional, high quality, all natural hair and skin care products at an affordable price. Every ingredient is derived from nature and includes natural butters, oils, and certified organic essential oils. Her products do not contain parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oil, PBA, petroleum, paraffin DEA, synthetic color or animal products. Now THAT was a mouthful.

I bought a sample pack since I had never used her products before. To me, sample packs are a great way to get multiple products and see how a line works. I bought the Soothing Herbal Eucalyptus and Lavender Sample Pack for $25. The pack contains: Moisturizing Shaeloe Leave In Conditioner, Hydrating Shaeloe Creamy Conditioner, Nourishing Hair & Body Butter of your choice and Soothing Herbal Gel of your choice. These were 2 ounce sizes so that gives you enough for a couple of applications (on the average). It was sent in a beautiful brown organza bag.

I decided to co-wash using the Shaeloe Leave In Conditioner. I then deep conditioned for about 30-40 minutes with the Hydrating Shaeloe Creamy Conditioner and then I used the Shaeloe Leave In Conditioner again (as my leave-in this time).  The picture below shows my hair with the Hydrating Shaeloe Creamy Conditioner rinsed out and the Shaeloe Leave In Conditioner applied.

Pamela has a loyal following and her conditioners have been a holy grail staple of many naturals for years. Her Shaeloe Leave In Conditioner has been lovingly called the new “Creamy Crack” for years and has developed a cult following.

The conditioners did leave my hair soft and it aided with detangling.

I then used the Herbal Soothing Curl Defining Gel – I choose the Eucalyptus and Lavender fragrance. All of her products have a great fragrance and upon layering the products, none clashed with each other.

20151119_195550_resized

I have low porosity hair at my temples which means its dryer and frizzier than the rest of my hair. The hair there is also harder of hold a curl. I attempted a WashnGo using her products. They did well but I did have to use Eco Styler gel in the low porosity spots. I regretted that the next day because it left me with hard curls while the hair that had Pamela’s products only was still soft. Shoulda left well enough alone, right????  But the rest of my hair was bangin!!!!!

20151119_195401_resized

I did not use the butter because I wanted to save that for my body – why should my hair get all the fun?
I achieved 3 day curls using her products and it might have lasted longer, but I had to wash my hair.

My final thoughts???? You have GOT to try the products just for the conditioner alone.  That conditioner is legendary.  Yes, there are a zillion conditioners on the market, but how many are botanically made, creamy and provides good slip??? Koils by Nature also provides products in TEN different fragrances including “unscented” so there is something for everyone.  They also have a membership program where you can purchase a membership for $45 and save money all year on products purchases, be first to find out about new products and receive discounts for Koils by Nature events.  Once you become a member you can reapply at a discounted price the following  year.

Control Hair Care

As a Naturalista, you know that moisture and conditioning is paramount for our hair.  The search is always on for a great conditioner and one with natural ingredients is a plus.  I have found a wonderful product by Control Hair Care called Mega Moisture Masque. As you can see, the consistency is light and fluffy.

20151114_141447_resized    20151114_134033-1_resized

The Mega Moisture Masque is natural and an organic hair nourishment for your hair.  It’s a deep conditioning treatment made from Jasmine Green Tea and Brazilian Cupuacu.  This product will soften, strengthen and rejuvenate dry, damaged and brittle hair.  Their tagline is that it’s “Handmade WITH LOVE” and you can see how once you try the product.

I asked Leone what the uses were for the product after she sent it to me and she explained that it’s a multi-use product. She said it can be used as a cold wash for stream treatments, overnight treatment or leave-in.  I LOVE a good leave-in so once she said that, I was sold.

I washed my hair and then smoothed and raked the product into my hair.  Let me tell you about how good it smells.  It smells absolutely AMAZING!!!!  One of the best smelling products I have ever used and I have used my fair share of products.  The smell is very tropical and slightly “flowery” but not in an overbearing way.  I don’t feel like I’m walking around smelling like a field of flowers and I’m about to be attacked by a swarm of bees.  The list of ingredients is jasmine flowers, green tea, raw cupuacu butter, hemp oil and avocado oil.  Now how can you go wrong with a healthy green list of products like this? You can’t go wrong.  Right now everyone is concerned about eating green, why not treat your hair the same way. This is an indulgent way to pamper your hair and provide health and wellness to it at the same time.

Ok, I got off topic with describing the smell, let’s get back to the application of the product.  I raked and smoothed the product and my curls started to pop.20151113_190234_resized 20151113_191043_resized20151113_192020_resized It has great slip and raked through very easily.  My hair smelled amazing and was moisturized instantly. After the product was applied to my whole head, I loosely combined my hair into 4 sections, applied my styling product and allowed my hair to air dry.  Before I went to bed, I sectioned my hair into about 7 mini puffs (my hair is too short to “pineapple”), put on my bonnet and went to sleep.

The next morning, I took my bonnet off and my hair STILL smelled amazing.  I even had my husband smell it and he said “wow”.  I took the bands out of my hair, shook my head and fluffed my hair a little bit and here’s the results:

20151114_132305_resized20151114_132125_resized

Amazing curl definition, light and smells to die for.   I can’t remember the last time my hair stood up on it’s own from a washngo.  That is a feat within itself and demonstrates how light the product is.  I’m very happy with the results.  I give Leone and her product 2 thumbs up in a big way.

Naturalicious OooLaLocks Box

As most of you know by now, I am a Wonder Curl affiliate but I have a tons of blogs to do that I have fallen behind on.  I am saying this to say that you will start seeing me talk about other products that I purchased previously, won or were given.  I am horribly behind and have tons of product to review that I haven’t given away so I got to get these fingers moving.  I just wanted to get that piece of housekeeping out of the way so people weren’t looking at me side-eyed like this . . .

IMG_11157446116375

With that being said, let’s get right down to it.  Today’s review is on Naturalicious.  This company is the brain child of founder and CEO, Gwen Jimmere.  Before we dive into the product, let’s talk about Gwen.  She is a history maker.  She is the FIRST BLACK WOMAN to hold a patent on a Natural Hair Product!!!!  Did you hear me???  I need you to go back and read the previous sentence in case you missed it.  She has also been featured on Black Enterprise and on Tom Joyner.  That ALONE made me want to try the product because anything with that many accolades must be great.  Gwen has been not only making product but traveling around the county teaching and educating people on healthy natural hair.

Now let’s get to the product!!!!  I purchased this kit with my own money after seeing Gwen do a Periscope broadcast where she actually washed her hair live and styled in under 30 mins.  I literally watched her do a washngo on Periscope in real-time.  I was sold. I had read reviews of people saying how quick and easy it was and how their hair was left so soft so I thought, let me give this a try.

I purchased the OooLaLocks Kinky/Coily box.  This is also another box called Curly/Wavy for people with looser curl patterns.  The claim to fame of her products is that the box of 4 items does the work of 13 products.  So what’s in the box?  Here it is:

20151026_183051_resized

  1. Moroccan Rhassoul 5-in-1 Clay Treatment. This is a cleanser, conditioner, deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner and detangler.
  2. Moisture Infusion Styling Crème.  This is a moisturizer, styler and heat protectant.
  3. Divine Shine Oil & Sealing Treatment.  This is a frizz fighter, moisture lock and hot oil treatment.
  4. Heavenly Hydration Hair Mist.  This is a refresher spray and protective style hydrator.

So as you can see, each product packs a punch of goodness and this is why you can do less with more.  She has a 1 Hour Wash Day challenge that you can find on her Instagram page as well as on YouTube.  She also sells a Spanish Almond Regrowth Oil and Ghanaian Shea Butter that are not included in the box but can be purchased separately.

So I took the challenge.  I did not formally go online and proclaim that I was about to do it but I did it and she was right.  It DID take less than an hour to achieve a washngo style.  This is HUGE!!!!!!!!  A wash day can actually take up the entire day for some naturals and this cut the process down dramatically.  Naturalicious will have a naturalista bout to cut a step (do that church dance).  You mean I can do something else on Wash day other than tend to my hair???? What????!!!!???

IMG_14068763964248

The clay cleanser really promotes your curl pattern, I noticed that immediately and detangling was not a problem either.  I was also surprised how easily it rinsed out of my hair.  I was expecting a muddy mess and it rinsed clean and rinsed out quickly.  Even the stubborn hairs in my temple that usually never curled became curly.  The last picture in the series of 3 is the end result –  the white you see around my edges is the moisturizer.

20151027_184523_resized20151027_192538_resized20151027_190850_resized

I am not the washngo type of girl, so I usually wear the style on wash day to aid in drying and wear a different style the next day so here is the afro puff that was achieved from my twist out that I did before bed on washday.

20151028_082539_resized As you can see my puff still has great curl definition and is full.  This was another thing I loved about her products, you have body from the very beginning on wash day.  There was no waiting days to get fullness and fluffiness, it was there day 1.  Like everyone said, my hair was very soft and smelled great.

The 4 step system cost $49.99 which is a bargain because if you bought all of the items that these 4 items do, you will easily spend over $100.  If you become a VIP member (a subscription membership that is free to sign up for) you can save money and control how often you want the products delivered to you.

This is my second time using the products in the box and I have my hair twisted for my puff that I will wear tomorrow.  Check out my Instragram page (@pjacksone) to see me and my puff in action.

Naturalicious provides a great savings and combines wonderful products with quickness and efficiency.  The result is soft and beautiful hair with light bouncy curls.  I say, give it a try, what have you got to lose:  an hour of your day at the most.
